I want to purchase a Coach Leather Handbag as a gift for my friend who lives in Iowa. Will the leather crack and ruin the bag in the winter when it gets cold? If so can this be prevented by conditioning the leather throughout the year?
Or would it be better to get a fabric bag with leather trim?

Go with leather. Coach leathers are really good. The fabric bags get dirty easily so you have to be more careful (I have a couple Coach ones). The leather conditioner is a good idea to use anyway, but it's the cheap vinyl/PVC "pleather" that cracks in the winter. I live in Canada and I haven't had any problems with quality leather.
